Based on the best-selling autobiography of world-class climber Andy Kirkpatrick, Psycho Vertical is an award-winning documentary directed by Jen Randall about a family man who has repeatedly risked his life to ascend some of the world's most dangerous alpine routes. The focus of the film is Kirkpatrick's gruelling solo ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite, California - a vertical wall of granite rock that rises 3,000 feet. As Kirkpatrick clambers up the face, sleeping in a collapsible cot harnessed to El Capitan, the documentary traces the climber's formative years in 1970s Hull and the impact of an absent father. The adrenaline rush of stand-up comedy hasn't convinced Kirkpatrick to scale back his daredevil endeavours. He continues to bid farewell to his loved ones to push himself beyond physical and psychological limits as he attempts perilous climbs on his own.
