The Nothing Factory (A Fabrica de Nada)
Documentary filmmaker Pedro Pinho makes his fiction feature debut as writer-director with a gritty musical drama, which is inspired by true events in 2008 Portugal. Ze (Jose Smith Vargas) lives with his girlfriend Carla (Carla Galvao) and her young son Mowgli (Njamy Sebastiao). He earns a meagre wage by assembling lifts at a factory in Lisbon, which is partially owned by the workforce. Staff begin to fear the worst when management at the factory 'relocate' the equipment to another site and rumours are rife that Ze and his colleagues are going to be made redundant. The workers, who are predominantly men, dig their heels in and refuse to cave to veiled threats from senior figures. Indeed, the workers discuss the possibility of defying the authorities and running the factory themselves.
