In 2016, Illinois-born director David Ayer was ringmaster of the comic book blockbuster Suicide Squad, orchestrating a frenetic battle of good versus evil on the streets of Midway City. Now, he joins forces with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton for a futuristic action thriller, which streams exclusively on Netflix and also screens in selected cinemas. The setting is an alternate vision of 21st-century Los Angeles in which humans live alongside mythological creatures including orcs, elves and fairies. This cross-species melting pot simmers with tension and the LAPD has the unenviable task of maintaining law and order. Human cop Daryl Ward (Will Smith) is reluctantly partnered with orc cop Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton) to safeguard the streets. During one routine night-time patrol, they are called to a disturbance and apprehend a suspect carrying a forgotten relic: a magic wand that grants the wishes of whoever brandishes it. If this artefact falls into the wrong hands, the repercussions would be terrifying. Ward and Jakoby puts aside their differences to protect the wand from an onslaught of otherworldly enemies.
