Song of Granite

Shot in lustrous black and white, Song Of Granite is an impressionistic biopic of Irish folk singer Joe Heaney, who promoted the traditional Gaelic sean nos style of music. Adopting an intentionally fragmented structure, the film traces Heaney's life through three key periods from youth (Colm Seoighe), when he immersed himself in the rich culture of County Galway, through young adulthood (Micheal O Chonfhaola) and then into his later years (Macdara O Fatharta) when he was consigned largely to the UK and America. Director Pat Collins juxtaposes his dramatisations with archive footage of the real Joe Heaney singing or waxing lyrical about his craft.
