For centuries, mankind has been obsessed with climbing towards the heavens using ropes, ladders and brute strength. Jennifer Peedom, director of BAFTA-nominated documentary Sherpa, delivers a visually sumptuous history lesson dating back to the early days of western mountaineering, which journeys to the pinnacle of the world in the company of thriller-seekers of all shapes and sizes. Footage has been gathered from 15 countries, where an endless stream of extreme sports enthusiasts, climbers, snowboarders and mountain bikers equipped with parachutes pits wits against Mother Nature at her most brutal and unforgiving. Peedom's film captures the breathtaking splendour at these dizzying altitudes and the sense of camaraderie between mountaineers, who push themselves to the physical limit where others fear to tread.
