La belle et la bete
A lustrous digitally restored print of Jean Cocteau's 1946 fantasy based on the classic fairytale set to Georges Auric's haunting orchestral score. Beast (Jean Marais) catches a father (Marcel Andre) stealing a rose from his garden and agrees to spare the old man's life in exchange for the company of one of his three daughters: Adelaide (Nane Germon), Belle (Josette Day) and Felicie (Mila Parely). Kind-hearted and generous Belle submits to Beast's demand and takes her father's place at the enchanted castle, which is blessed with talking mirrors, animated statues and a magical candelabra. Initially, Belle is repulsed by her gruff and hideous host but over time, sees through his hirsute exterior and glimpses the wounded heart beating within.
