In a Lonely Place
A rerelease of Nicholas Ray's atmospheric 1950 noir thriller, based on the novel by Dorothy B Hughes, about a troubled Hollywood screenwriter who is accused of murder and the woman who clears his name. Emotionally volatile writer Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart) is persuaded by his agent Mel (Art Smith) to consider adapting a trashy book for the big screen. Nightclub coat check girl Mildred Atkinson (Martha Stewart) has read the book in question and Dixon invites her back to his apartment to better understand the source material. She leaves that night but the following morning, Dixon is arrested for Mildred's murder and held for questioning by police captain Lochner (Carl Benton Reid). Actress Laurel Gray (Gloria Grahame), who lives in Dixon's apartment complex, confirms his version of events and he is released from custody. Over the coming days, Laurel is disturbed by Dixon's violent mood swings and she wonders if she has innocently provided a murderer with an alibi.
