Gauguin - Voyage de Tahiti

Screening as part of the 25th anniversary edition of the French Film Festival UK, writer-director Edouard Deluc's drama takes a loose approach to historical accuracy to chart post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin's first journey to French Polynesia in the early 1890s. Gauguin (Vincent Cassel) is an impoverished artist, who invests more time and effort in his canvases than his personal relationships. He abandons his Danish wife Mette (Pernille Bergendorff) and their children to paint in sunnier climes, where he becomes intoxicated by the landscapes and people. He welcomes a local girl Tehura (Tuhei Adams) as his living companion and muse, and in return, the locals christen him Koke. The relationship between the painter and Tehura intensifies but she is also drawn to Jotepha (Pua-Tai Hikutini), who becomes the third point of a volatile love triangle that distracts Gauguin from his art.
