Buena Vista Social Club: Adios
In 1998, Wim Wenders directed the jazz documentary Buena Vista Social Club, which traced Ry Cooder's return visit to Cuba to re-assemble the group of talented musicians who collaborated with him on his 1996 Grammy Award-winning album. Lucy Walker's follow-up examines the fortunes of the singers and musicians from the Buena Vista Social Club over the past two decades, juxtaposing interviews and reminiscence with concert footage, archive material and photographs to enrich the portraits of group members including pianist Ruben Gonzalez, singer Omara Portuondo, guitarist and singer Compay Segundo, and laud player Barbarito Torres. In some cases, Adios is a fitting subtitle.
