Boy
Released in New Zealand in 2010 before director Taika Waititi gained international fame with What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Boy is a touching coming-of-age comedy that centres on an 11-year-old Maori called Boy (James Rolleston). He is being raised in 1980s Waihau Bay alongside his younger brother Rocky (Te Aho Aho Eketone-Whitu) by an extended family led by his maternal grandmother (Mavis Paenga). When he isn't trying to impress pretty classmate Chardonnay (RickyLee Waipuka-Russell), Boy conjures fantastical tales about his estranged ex-convict father, Alamein (Waititi), who has been absent from his life for many years. Shortly after Boy's grandmother has to leave to attend a funeral, Alamein returns to the family home, supposedly to rebuild bridges with his sons. The truth involves a bag of money, hidden somewhere on the farm.
