The Road to Mandalay
Lianqing (Wu Ke-xi) lives in Myanmar, across the border from Thailand, but she is determined to forge a better life by securing permanent employment in Bangkok and - eventually - a passport for the neighbouring country. She is crammed into a van with other hopefuls including Guo (Kai Ko), who flirts with Lianqing and tries to persuade her to join him at a textile factory, which employs illegal immigrants without question. Instead, she ploughs her own path, with emotional support from a flatmate called Cai (Yue Gai-huan). In time, Lianqing finds employment as a dish washer in a restaurant. Fate deals her a losing hand and she is exploited by members of the city's criminal underworld. Even when all hope seems lost, Lianqing refuses to admit defeat.
