Tom of Finland

Director Dome Karukoski pays tribute to the Finnish gay erotic artist, whose eye-catching depictions of men in leather and uniform filtered into mainstream culture. Touko Laaksonen (Pekka Strang) serves with distinction in the Finnish army during the Second World War. The conflict sows the seeds of Touko's fascination with men in power. He returns home and remains in the closet so as not to arouse the suspicions of his homophobic younger sister, Kaija (Jessica Grabowsky). They live together and also work at the same advertising agency, where Touko is employed as an illustrator. The work is unedifying and Touko keeps his creative juices flowing by secretly sketching homoerotic depictions of muscular men. He signs each illustration Tom Of Finland. A handsome new lodger, a dancer called Veli (Lauri Tilkanen), reignites Touko's dormant desires and encourages the artist to share his work with a wider audience.
