Prick Up Your Ears

A 30th anniversary re-issue of Stephen Frears' celebrated biopic of Joe Orton, which also neatly coincides with the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in the Sexual Offences Act. Based on a screenplay by Alan Bennett, Prick Up Your Ears was nominated for three BAFTAs and strikes a deep emotional chord three decades after it was first released. Gary Oldman plays hugely talented gay playwright Orton, whose relationship with Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina) flies in the face of homosexuality laws of the time. When fame comes knocking at Orton's door, Halliwell feels abandoned by the man he loves and vents his anger by battering Orton to death in the home they share.
