Cinema listings with film information and movie reviews
Based on the novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, director Satoshi Kon's celebrated animated thriller didn't reach these shores until 1999, two years after the film premiered at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal. To mark the 20th anniversary of that auspicious debut, Perfect Blue screens at selected UK and Irish in its full glory. Pop singer Mima Kirigoe (voiced by Junko Iwao) pursues her dreams of becoming an actress. She poses nude for top shelf magazines, all in the names of fame and fortune. Just when it seems Mima might succeed, a face from the past threatens to wreck her carefully laid plans and bring her down to Earth with a nasty bump. Despite some very brutal sequences and disturbing misogynist undertones, Perfect Blue should appeal to fans of the genre and newcomers alike.
