City of Ghosts
Documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman, won collected an Oscar and a BAFTA for his 2014 feature Cartel Land, explores the power of the media to change lives in his bravura new picture. City Of Ghosts pays tribute to Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS), a group of journalists from the Syrian city, which has become a stronghold for ISIS. Day after day, members of RBSS risk their lives to transmit footage, photographs and written reports of atrocities in Raqqa in the hope they can educate the outside world and undermine the glossy recruitment videos produced by ISIS that woo young Muslim men from the west. Many members of RBSS have fled their homeland to Germany and Turkey but they still live in fear. Heineman's film is granted intimate access to some of these crusading journalists as they witness friends and family being slaughtered in reprisal for their actions.
