The Death Of Louis XIV (La mort de Louis XIV)
Writer-director Albert Serra chronicles the final days of the Sun King in this impeccably staged and grimly funny historical drama. Louis XIV (Jean-Pierre Leaud) is gravely ill and the whirl of medics and courtiers that surround the monarch struggles to carry out duties. Different physicians and surgeons including Fagon (Patrick d'Assumcao) and Mareschal (Bernard Belin) disagree in hushed voices about the best course of action, fearful of upsetting the King in case he sends them to the Bastille. As Louis' light fades, those closest to him come to terms with the void in their lives and the repercussions for 18th century France.
