Love Is The Devil
Less a film, more a series of highly stylised vignettes, John Maybury's biopic of Francis Bacon makes for incredibly frustrating viewing. Mimicking Bacon's distinctive painting style, Maybury uses coloured lenses, obtuse angles and close-ups, as well as some striking imagery, to try to shed new light on the artist's turbulent relationship with his self-destructive lover George Dyer. However, all he succeeds in doing is making the film virtually impenetrable. Derek Jacobi gives a superb performance as Bacon, haunted by demons and his own insecurities, and Daniel Craig is equally impressive as Dyer. But they are the only two bright spots on an otherwise murky and uninviting canvas.
