Documentary filmmaker Sara Jordeno immerses herself in the modern ballroom scene in New York City, focusing on house mothers like Twiggy Pucci Garcon and Chi Chi Mizrahi, who encourage gay and transgender African-American teenagers to build a sense of community and self-worth by transforming themselves into drag divas and competing at dance-offs for cash prizes. The Kiki balls as they are known promote inclusivity and offer invaluable advice to the teenagers about safe sex and testing for STDs in an era when HIV infection is alarmingly high. The film meets some of the colourful personalities, who orbit Christopher Street Pier in the West Village, and are at the epicentre of this cultural movement to ignite the political fires of LGBTQ youth and increase their visibility.
