Vegetarians and those of a nervous disposition will need to give director Julia Ducournau's grisly coming-of-age story a wide berth for its graphic scenes of cannibalism and blood-letting. Teenager Justine (Garance Marillier) has been raised as a vegetarian by her strict parents (Laurent Lucas, Joana Preiss), who are fanatical about removing all meat from the family's diets. Justine follows her older sister Alexia (Ella Rumpf) to veterinary college, where she is subjected to a series of hazing rituals along with the other freshmen including her gay roommate, Adrien (Rabah Nait Oufella). One of these tests is to eat a rabbit's kidney and Justine reluctantly agrees after Alexia confides that she had to eat a kidney the previous year. The forbidden taste of flesh causes Justine's skin to develop a painful rash and she begins to hunger for meat. This craving becomes so intense that she feasts on a severed finger. Unable to control her cannibalistic desires, Justine joins Alexia on the hunt for fresh meat, killing innocent and unsuspecting passersby in order to feast on them.
