Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale
Based on the Sword Art Online series of novels penned by Reki Kawahara, this futuristic animation directed by Tomohiko Ito explores the adventurers of young friends in virtual reality. Four years after the release of Akihiko Kayaba's revolutionary hardware NerveGear, which allows players to fully immerse themselves in imaginary realms, a new technology called the Augma hits the market. Unlike its rival, the wearable device uses augmented reality to melds real life with fantasy in a safe yet fun environment for players. Asuna (voiced by Haruka Tomatsu), Lisbeth (Ayahi Takagaki) and Silica (Rina Hidaka) are huge fans of Augma's most popular game, Ordinal Scale, a combat experience which allows players to work together to increase their ranking. Asuna and her friends invite Kirito (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) to join them but as the battles unfold and players are eliminated based on their physical weaknesses and tactical naivete, it becomes clear that Ordinal Scale conceals dark secrets that test the bonds of friendship to breaking point.
