Fear Eats the Soul
A rerelease of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's seminal 1974 drama, which charts a seemingly impossible love affair across a cultural divide. On her way home from work as a cleaning woman, 60-year-old widow Emmi (Brigitte Mira) seeks shelter from the rain inside a Moroccan bar where immigrant worker Ali (El Hedi ben Salem) and his friends are enjoying a drink. One of the party jokingly suggests that Ali should ask Emmi to dance to the intoxicating Arabic music and he agrees. Friendship blossoms into something deeper and Ali moves into Emmi's apartment. The relationship causes concern for Emmi's daughter Krista (Irm Hermann) and disapproving son-in-law Eugen (Fassbinder) but the old woman ignores their warnings. When the landlord's son Gruber (Marquard Bohm) learns that Emmi has a lodger, he points out that this violates the terms of her agreement. On the spur of the moment, she lies and says that she and Ali intend to marry so they can live under the same roof as husband and wife.
