Sonia Braga delivers a scintillating performance in Kleber Mendonca Filho's drama about a proud woman, who refuses to be bullied or intimidated by property developers, who want to steal her home from under her. Sixtysomething music critic Clara (Braga) lives in the pretty Brazilian coastal city of Recife in an apartment block called The Aquarius, which overlooks the beach. She has raised her family in the shabby building, and also fought cancer here, so Clara has a great deal of emotion invested in her modest residence. Ambitious young property developer Diego (Humberto Carrao) arrives unannounced and attempts to persuade Clara to sell him her home so he can redevelop the site into expensive condos. She politely declines and Diego applies increasing pressure to force Clara to sign. However, the young upstart underestimates his target and Clara responds to each thinly veiled threat with resilience and steely determination to make her daughter (Maeve Jinkings) proud.
