The Age of Shadows

Keeping your enemies close is vital to survival in Kim Jee-woon's blood-soaked thriller, which was South Korea's 2017 Academy Award submission for the coveted Best Foreign Language Film statuette. In the late 1920s, Korea's fierce resistance to Japanese occupation threatens to ignite with devastating consequences. Korean-born Captain Lee Jung-chool (Song Kang-ho) has betrayed his friends and colleagues by aligning himself with the Japanese, agreeing to root out members of the resistance operating under leader Che-san (Lee Byung-hun). One of the prime targets is antiques dealer Kim Woo-jin (Gong Yoo), whose shop is believed to be a front for resistance operations. While Captain Lee sets about interrogating Kim Woo-jin, Che-san embarks on his own covert plan to turn the police captain against his new masters by exploiting the emotional devastation inflicted by the death of Captain's Lee's old classmate, Kim Jan-ok (Park Hee-soon). Allegiances repeatedly shift as figures on both side of the war double-cross each other.
