The Pass
The timely issue of homophobia in football, and the lack of an openly gay player in the major British leagues, inspires Ben A Williams' drama, which John Donnelly has adapted from his own acclaimed stage play. Structured as three acts, each set five years apart, the film opens in a hotel room in Romania where team mates Jason (Russell Tovey) and Ade (Arinze Kene) banter back and forth on the eve of a big match that will be attended by talent scouts. Both young men are determined to dazzle on the field to secure their dream: a contract with a team in the Premier League. Jason's cocksure swagger contrasts with Ade's more restrained outlook on life, but a sexually charged moment between the two men changes everything, rippling through both of their futures as they confront the repercussions of their repressed desires on and off the pitch.
