The Wailing (Goksung)
South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin, director of the gripping action thriller The Chaser, veers into horror territory with this unsettling supernatural yarn. Sergeant Jeon Jong-gu (Kwak Do-won) and his team arrive in the village of Goksung where a crazed man has stabbed his wife and children to death. It's the first in a series of violent crimes, carried out by perpetrators who are blighted with unsightly boils and rashes. Superstitious neighbours point the finger of blame at a newly arrived Japanese man (Jun Kunimura), who they believe to be a demon. Jeon doesn't put stock in these wild imaginings but when his own daughter Hyo-jin (Kim Hwan-hee) suddenly develops a rash and begins acting like a creature possessed, the cop realises he may be dealing with dark forces beyond the long arm of the law.
