My Scientology Movie
The Church of Scientology has been probed and excoriated in a series of recent documentaries including Alex Gibney's award-winning expose Going Clear: Scientology And The Prison Of Belief. Presenter and social provocateur Louis Theroux takes a slightly different approach by talking to men and women who have left the Church, and he recreates some of their alleged bizarre practices using actors to portray its leader David Miscavige and various followers. As Theroux's investigation gathers pace, he begins to notice that the Church is following him and recording his activities as well as threatening former member Marty Rathbun, who is a key element of Theroux's film. The power and paranoia of the Church inadvertently become a focal point for the film as Theroux asks uncomfortable questions and risks expensive legal reprisals.
