Southside with You
Written and directed by Richard Tanne, Southside With You dramatises the first romantic date of the President of the United States, Barack Obama, and his wife Michelle. Adopting a similar structure to Richard Linklater's Before Sunset, the film follows Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) as she finally agrees to spend some personal time with Harvard law student Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers), who is working at her firm for the summer. The focus of their evening is a residents' meeting to address problems in the community. Before they join this animated debate, Barack and Michelle get to know each other during a visit to an art gallery then share sandwiches in the park. Later, they watch Spike Lee's seminal film Do The Right Thing and enjoy ice cream as their date comes to its happy conclusion.
