The Fencer (Miekkailija)
The small Baltic state of Estonia has been under Russia's Communist rule since the end of the Second World War and a young man called Endel Nelis (Mart Avandi) arrives in the town of Haapsalu to take up the position of PE teacher at the local high school. Initially, Endel shows very little affection for his young charges but he does set up a fencing club, which proves incredibly popular with both students and parents. Two youngsters in particular, Jaan (Joonas Koff) and Marta (Liisa Koppel), have a profound effect on Endel and melt his frosty exterior. In time, the teacher sows the seeds of romance with work colleague Kadri (Ursula Ratasepp) but his rising popularity grates with the officious school headmaster (Hendrik Toompere). The two men clash and the headmaster slyly begins to dig into Endel's shady past to uncover a scandal that will undermine the new teacher's standing in the community.
