The Lovers and the Despot
Filmmakers Robert Cannan and Ross Adam document one of the most bizarre interludes the history of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea when director Shin Sang-ok and actress Choi Eun-hee were kidnapped at the behest of the country's leader Kim Jong-il. Testimony from Eun-hee and her children creates a timeline for events leading up to the kidnappings and the emotionally devastating aftermath, enhanced with dramatic reconstructions. The film also incorporates the couple's secret audio recordings of Jong-il, while they were in his presence, revealing the leader's unerring love for cinema and his determination to elevate the country as a cultural force.
