With an incredible 11 Academy Awards on the mantlepiece (a feat matched by the equally epic Titanic), William Wyler's 1st century adventure is a feast for the sense on all levels. Square-jawed Charlton Heston plays the titular Jewish prince wrongly accused for supposedly trying to kill the governor Messala, who vows revenge when he is sent to the galleys, and his wife and mother put in prison. Despite the unwieldy running time, Ben-Hur rarely lacks pace or intrigue, and boasts that incredible chariot race sequence, the forerunner to the modern car chase.
