Things to Come (L' Avenir)
Middle-aged philosophy professor Nathalie (Isabelle Huppert) believes she has a firm grasp on the intricacies of the human condition but even she is shocked when her husband of 25 years and fellow academic, Heinz (Andre Marcon), abruptly leaves her for another woman. Unable to seek solace in the arms of her mother, Yvette (Edith Scob), Natalie seeks refuge instead in her work and her close relationship with her brilliant student, Fabien (Roman Kolinka). Natalie repeatedly challenges Fabien so he can grow into an independent thinker but the more she inspires her protege, the further away he grows from Natalie, intensifying her sense of abandonment by the men in her life.
