Author: The JT LeRoy Story
In the late 1990s, author JT LeRoy exploded into the popular culture and overnight, the mythical figure accumulated a menagerie of celebrity admirers and friends. His first novel, Sarah, was accompanied by a few public appearances and a second novel, aptly entitled The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, was adapted into a film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2005, an expose revealed that LeRoy didn't exist and was the creation of a Brooklyn mother called Laura Albert. Jeff Feuerzeig's documentary tries to make sense of this literary dupe by interviewing Albert about her past, sifting fact from fiction in the company of an unreliable narrator, who shaped and moulded her alter ego during telephone calls with the rich and famous including Courtney Love and Billy Corgan.
