Born to Be Blue
Ethan Hawke delivers a compelling lead performance as jazz musician Chet Baker in director Robert Budreau's unconventional biopic, which melds fact and fiction with a soundtrack of some of Baker's most celebrated songs, including I've Never Been In Love Before, Let's Get Lost, My Funny Valentine and the title track. It is the 1960s and Baker's career and personal life are in tatters after years of heroin addiction. The musician is a shadow of his former self during the 1950s, when he was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world and a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene. Baker resolves to stage an unlikely comeback spurred on by his passionate romance with a new flame called Jane (Carmen Ejogo). However, demons of the past continue to haunt him and Baker threatens to squander his genius again.
