A young academic resorts to drastic measures to solve her romantic woes in Rebecca Miller's astutely observed comedy drama. Maggie (Greta Gerwig) is a member of staff at a college in New York, who prides herself on being in total control of her fate. She yearns to be a mother and informs her best friends Tony (Bill Hader) and Felicia (Maya Rudolph) that she intends to inseminate herself with sperm from a local pickle entrepreneur called Guy (Travis Fimmel). The plan goes swimmingly until Maggie falls under the spell of lecturer and writer John (Ethan Hawke), who is unhappily married to feisty Columbia University Professor Georgette (Julianne Moore). The subsequent extra-marital affair destroys John and Georgette's relationship. Over time, Maggie questions if her new beau is really her soulmate and she comes to the crushing realisation that she has made a terrible mistake. On order to assuage her guilt, Maggie hatches a hare-brained plan to reunite John and Georgette.
