My Name Is Emily
Irish writer-director Simon Fitzmaurice's debut feature is a coming of age story that also touches upon the thorny issue of mental health. Spirited teenager Emily (Evanna Lynch) has always been close to her philosopher father Robert (Michael Smiley), whose books encourage readers to break free from social conventions and pursue self-fulfilment at any cost. This bond is tested when Emily's mother dies and her father is institutionalised. The plucky teenager is sent to live with foster parents and she runs the gauntlet of accusing stares at her new school, where no one wants to engage with her, except for a classmate called Arden (George Webster). He is smitten with Emily, a fellow oddball, and when she hatches a hare-brained scheme to help her father to escape from hospital, Arden pledges his unwavering support.
