The Pearl Button
Narrated by Chilean director Patricio Guzman, this conceptual documentary is a meditation on the importance of water to the country, which boasts a 2600-mile coastline. The filmmaker looks initially to the stars, where the water originated, and explores the rich history and dark politics of Chile including the relationship between the native peoples and European settlers. Archive photographs and materials bring these chapters to life including the story of a British captain, who bought one Chilean boy for a button and attempted to integrate the child - nicknamed Jemmy Button - into polite society. The boy eventually returned to his homeland but was irrevocably changed by his experiences.
