Next to Her
A woman's compassion for her mentally challenged sister reaches dangerous extremes in Asaf Korman's assured Hebrew language drama. Chelli (Liron Ben-Shlush) works as a security guard at a junior high school, but her life is devoted to her 24-year-old sister Gabby (Dana Ivgy), who has the mental age of an infant. The siblings share a dingy apartment and, if necessary, Chelli locks Gabby inside the home while she works to ensure no harm comes to her beloved sister. Chelli and Gabby are entirely co-dependent and neither has much of a life outside of the apartment's walls. So when Chelli unexpectedly sparks up an amorous conversation with gym teacher Zohar (Yaakov Daniel Zada), it is a welcome escape from the harsh reality of her responsibilities as a carer. Romance blossoms and Zohar suggests that he should move into the apartment with the sisters. The presence of a man in this cocoon forces Chelli to come to terms with her obsessive relationship with her sister and make painful decisions about the future.
