Ram Madhvani directs this Hindi thriller based on the true story of the youngest ever recipient of the Ashoka Chakra award, India's highest peacetime military decoration for gallantry and self-sacrifice. On September 5, 1986, Pan Am flight 73 is on the ground at Jinah International Airport in Karachi when terrorists storm the craft and assume control. Twenty two-year-old flight attendant Neerja Bhanot (Sonam Kapoor) is the senior cabin crew member and she calms the terrified passengers. The terrorists order Neerja to collect the passports of everyone on board so they can identify the American nationals. The attendant hides the passports instead, hoping to protect the people in her care, regardless of the personal consequences. As the hours tick by in a tense stand-off between police and the terrorists, Neerja uses her intimate knowledge of the craft to conceive a risky plan of action, which could allow some of the passengers to escape unharmed through one of the emergency doors.
