No-good thieves Purvis (David Arquette) and Buddy (Sid Haig) desecrate the burial ground of a tribe of troglodytes and steal artefacts, which they subsequently bury on the outskirts of the small town of Bright Hope. The cannibalistic cave dwellers attack the town, kidnapping Purvis, doctor's wife Samantha O'Dwyer (Lili Simmons) and sheriff's deputy Nick (Evan Jonigkeit) and spirit away the captives to their lair in the mountains. Sheriff Franklin Hunt (Kurt Russell) and his ageing deputy Chicory (Richard Jenkins) launch a suicidal rescue mission accompanied by Samantha's distraught husband Arthur (Richard Wilson) and resident womaniser John Brooder (Matthew Fox), who boasts that he has killed more than 100 natives. This unlikely quartet journeys over rough terrain in search of the troglodytes, but the brave men are unprepared for the stomach-churning horrors that await them in S Craig Zahler's stylish yet gruesome western.
