The Forbidden Room
Provocative Canadian auteur Guy Maddin and co-director Evan Johnson pay tribute to the lost movies of the silent era with this kaleidoscopic pot pourri of waking dreams, which bleed into each other. The Forbidden Room opens with a faux instructional film entitled How To Take A Bath and slowly unravels to flit between the misadventures of a doomed submarine crew, a famous bone surgeon, a battalion of plucky child soldiers and a fearsome pack of forest bandits. With creative contributions from poet John Ashbery, the film ebbs and flows between these sinewy narratives, featuring performances from an all-star cast including Mathieu Amalric, Geraldine Chaplin, Roy Dupius, Udo Kier, Louis Negin and Charlotte Rampling.
