Letters to Max
Situated on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, Abkhazia seceded from Georgia during the 1992-93 Civil War and remains a disputed territory. The nation's independence is not widely recognised and does not technically exist to authorities in the UK. Artist and filmmaker Eric Baudelaire posted a letter to Maxim Gvinjia, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs for Abkhazia, and expected his correspondence to be returned as 'destination unknown'. Instead, he received a telephone call from Gvinjia which sparked a lively conversation about the contested state and its curious relationship with the international community. This documentary chronicles that communication between Baudelaire and Gvinjia, posing provocative and timely questions about national identity.
