Tangerines (Mandariinid)

Zaza Urushadze's harrowing drama was nominated as Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 Academy Awards. The story unfolds in early 1990s Abkhazia during the war between the government and separatists, who were demanding independence from Georgia. When hostilities break out, Estonian farmers Ivo (Lembit Ulfsak) and Margus (Elmo Nuganen) remain in their village to tend an orchard laden with tangerines, which need to be harvested or the fruits will go to waste. Two small platoons of soldiers on opposite sides of the conflict trade bullets and a Chechen mercenary called Ahmed (Giorgi Nakashidze), who fights on behalf of the Abkhazians, and Niko (Mikheil Meskhi), who fights for the Georgians, are the only survivors of the melee. Ivo and Margus tend to the two fighters and restore them to full strength. During this recovery period, Ahmed and Niko agree to behave with dignity. No blood must be spilt under Ivo and Margus' roof. This uneasy truce compels the two soldiers to gain deeper understanding of the pain and suffering behind the bloodshed.
