Nominated as Best Foreign Language Film at the 2015 Oscars, Abderrahmane Sissako's harrowing drama unfolds in and around the titular city, where daily rituals are conducted in three languages: Arabic, French and Touareg. A herdsman called Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed) enjoys a simple life with his wife Satima (Toulou Kiki) and their 12-year-old daughter. When a local fisherman kills Kidane's cow, the father confronts the culprit with unpredictably tragic consequences. The herdsman is judged for his regrettable crime by a warped justice system that doesn't allow for sentiment or mercy.
