The Man Who Fell to Earth
A 40th anniversary rerelease of Nicolas Roeg's cult 1976 sci-fi drama, which stars David Bowie as an earthbound extra-terrestrial searching for a solution to his home planet's demise. Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, the film centres on Thomas Jerome Newton (Bowie), an alien from the dying planet of Anthea, which desperately needs water to survive a catastrophic drought. In order to raise the money needed to build a spaceship that can ship water from Earth to Anthea, Newton uses his advanced intelligence to patent numerous inventions and establish World Enterprises Corporation. He subsequently falls in love with a waitress in New Mexico called Mary-Lou (Candy Clark), who introduces him to some of Earth's customs such as sex and excessive alcohol. Their romance flourishes until former college professor Dr Nathan Bryce (Rip Torn), who works at World Enterprises as a fuel technician, senses that something is awry with Newton and sets out to expose the billionaire as an otherworldly being.
