The Silence of the Lambs

Jonathan Demme's terrifying 1991 treatment of the Thomas Harris novel was the last film to complete the sweep of the big five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor In A Leading Role and Best Actress In A Leading Role. A sparkling new 4K transfer of The Silence Of The Lambs returns to cinemas in 2017 as part of the BFI's Who Can You Trust? season of thrillers, which will be touring cinemas around the UK and Ireland from October to December. Jodie Foster plays FBI trainee Clarice Starling, who is eager to please her superior, Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn). He oversees the Behavioral Science Unit and implores Clarice to earn the trust of cannibal murderer Dr Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) in order to track down a serial killer known as Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), who kidnaps women then skins his victims. To solve the case, Starling must open herself up to Lecter, who is an expert at manipulating his prey. In a series of charged conversations, closely monitored by Baltimore State Hospital director Dr Chilton (Anthony Heald), Starling allows herself to understand the mind set of Buffalo Bill and anticipate where he might strike next.
