The Evil Dead
More than 35 years after its initial release, Sam Raimi's cult horror still hasn't lost the power to disturb and shock. Made on a minuscule budget, The Evil Dead blitzkriegs the screen with blood and gore, and makes a hero out of its hapless protagonist, Ash, played with almost comical awkwardness by Bruce Campbell. Five friends - Ash (Campbell), Shelly (Sarah York), Linda (Betsy Baker), Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) and Scotty (Hal Delrich) - decide to spend a weekend in a remote log cabin in the woods. Upon arrival, the group discovers an ancient book filled with archaic writing, apparently in blood. When the words inside are read aloud, an evil spirit is invoked, which systematically possesses and kills the terrified chums. Thankfully, Ash has his wits, a chainsaw and a shovel to fend off the swirling darkness. A classic, but not for the faint-hearted.
