Feted at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, where the film collected the prestigious Grand Prix, Xavier Beauvois's absorbing drama is set in a monastery, located high in the mountains of the Maghreb. French Christian monks live in harmony with the Muslim locals, teaching the children and tending to the ill and infirm at a regular clinic. However, outside the walls, violence and terror are beginning to take hold of the region, posing a serious threat to the well being of the brotherhood. Despite the escalating dangers, Brother Christian (Lambert Wilson), Brother Luke (Michael Lonsdale) and the rest of the flock hold their ground, determined that the peace and unity they preach should provide a beacon of hope in these troubled times.
