Film School is a monthly film screening and discussion event at The Institute of Light in London Fields - kind of like book club for movies! As a film graduate and teacher, my aim with the event is to help people read films, rather than just watch them. I start with a talk, outlining a particular approach to film analysis, screen the focus film in full, then facilitate a group discussion inspired by that approach. So far we've tackled Structuralist and Post-Structuralist readings of The Shining, the Auteur Theory and It's A Wonderful Life and for our next event on February 21st, we're exploring Genre Theory in relation to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original of course!). The venue is closed to the public on our nights, so we have the whole place (including the staffed bar) to ourselves. Feedback has been extremely positive, but I'd like to get more bums on seats and I'm hoping to get a feature and listing in Time Out or similar publications.
