Between 1976 and 1981 archaeologists made some remarkable discoveries about Jorvik (the Viking name for York). The digs led to amazing finds relating to the Viking way of life and has revealed many details about their clothing, crafts and trade. Firstly there is an audio-visual display to explain exactly who the Vikings were. Then Time Cars carry visitors throughout the exhibitions from World War Two back to Norman times and then to a full-scale reconstruction of 10th-century Coppergate. This is all made possible with a soundtrack featuring authentic voices speaking in old Norse. The experience is complete with appropriate smells such as cooking, fish, pigsties and rubbish.
