Interview Techniques
Body Language
Body language is very important; interviewers often only remember what was said at the beginning and end of an interview, so how you say things is vital.
- Speak clearly, look alert and enthusiastic, there's nothing worse than mumbling.
- Make eye contact and smile. If you are interviewed by a panel, make eye contact with all and address your answers to all of them, don't just stare at the person who asked you the question.
- Look relaxed - don't fidget.
- Keep your hands away from your face, rubbing eyes or touching the mouth looks bad and nervous, can look as if you're lying.
- Nod to show you're paying attention.
- Lean forward to show interest and to speak, sit back to listen.
- Don't make sudden movements.
Employers want someone with good communication skills, who can
- be at ease with people
- express themselves well
- answer with confidence
- initiate conversation.
REMEMBER:
- Look enthusiastic and smile
- Emphasise strengths and achievements.
- Be positive, enthusiastic and motivated.
- BE YOURSELF - it is difficult to keep up a consistent act
- BE HONEST - don't imply you have experience you don't, it may backfire later.
- BE CONFIDENT - shake hands, make eye contact.
